Starting Out Kit - everything you need if you're just
starting to keep stick insects
Indian stick insects make great pets because they are easy to keep, good
to handle, are active, and are easy to feed, eating privet, ivy and bramble
(blackberry) leaves. Push the stems into a wet Pot and Oasis to keep
them fresh. Mist the leaves with water every day or two so that the stick
insects can drink from the droplets on the leaves.
Indian stick insects like company and so are sold in packs of
four medium-sized. You can watch them grow, they do this by sliding
downwards out of their skins every few weeks. A tall cage is needed to give
them room to grow; it must be at least 46cm, 18" high. Indian stick insects
like a very airy cage with through-draught ventilation and the Bug Studio
Professional is ideal housing for them.
They should be kept in clean
conditions so line the floor of the cage with a Liner and replace this
weekly. Keep the cage indoors in a room that is comfortably warm in the day and
cooler at night. No additional heating is required. Full details on Indian
stick insects are in Dorothy Floyd's book "Keeping Stick
Insects".

Duo Kit - Sabah stick insects and Thailand Winged stick
insects
Adult Thailand Winged (Sipyloidea sp) stick insects
like to fly across a room. So you should let them out of the cage about once a
week to do this.
Sabah (Aretaon asperrimus) stick insects
are active and good to handle.
Thailand Winged stick insects are slender
and green whereas Sabah stick insects are chunky and brown - so there is no
chance of confusing which is which!
These stick insects do best in a
tall cage with reduced air-flow and so included in the Duo Kit is one
Bug Studio Professional cage and one Ventilation Control Panel.
Ten Liners are included to keep the cage clean.
Medium-sized
stick insects are supplied; watch them grow over the next few months (they do
this by sliding downwards out of their skins every few weeks). A tall cage is
needed to give them room to grow; which is why the Bug Studio Professional is
46cm, 18" high. The Bug Studio Professional has see-through sides and so you
can see the stick insects clearly.
Sabah stick insects and Thailand
Winged stick insects eat bramble (blackberry) leaves; keep the stems fresh in
the wet Pot and Oasis supplied. Replace the leaves once a week. The
Sabah stick insects need extra water and so a Water Dish is included in
the Duo Kit.
These stick insects are harmless and can be
handled (although extra care is needed with the Thailand Winged because they
can topple about).
Details on each species are on the laminated colour
Collector Cards which are included in this Duo Kit.
The Duo
Kit - Sabah stick insects and Thailand Winged stick insects
contains:
- Four medium-sized Sabah stick insects
(mixture of males and females)
- Two medium-sized Thailand Winged stick
insects (one male and one female)
- One Bug Studio

- One Pot of Sand

Advice from the
expert... Stick insects are living
creatures and it is important to keep them in the best possible conditions and
look after them properly. Stick insects need a tall cage (46cm, 18"
high). The Bug Studio Professional and the Bug-XL-Cage are ideal; these cages
have been specially designed by the expert, Dorothy Floyd, for keeping stick
insects. Tanks are not suitable because they are not tall or airy enough.
Netting pop-up laundry bag enclosures are not suitable because it is difficult
to see the insects and they are impractical. Stick insects do well if kept
in a comfortably warm room indoors. They do not need extra
heating. Stick insects eat bramble (blackberry) leaves; these can be
gathered from wooded areas outside all year. The leaves should be misted with
water every day or so. The stick insects we supply are all harmless
and enjoy being handled. Most stick insects live about one year.
They lay eggs which, if saved, will hatch after a few months; the incubation
period varies with the species of stick insect. The book "Keeping Stick
Insects" by Dorothy Floyd explains how to look after the different types of
stick insects.
