We have designed the Professional Snail Centre as ideal housing for Giant African Land Snails (Achatina fulica) with a shell size greater than 2cm. The adjustable base ventilation system and absorbent Liners prevents the awful gloop and dirty conditions that occur when snails this size are kept in tanks.
Giant African Land Snails are active in the Professional Snail Centre. You can easily see the snails sliding up the clear sides and resting under the clear roof. Place the soft Liners on the floor; these absorb excess moisture and help cushion the impact of a snail should it fall, thereby protecting its shell from being damaged. Replace the soft Liners as necessary. These Liners are in two halves; this is so that you can adjust the ventilation. Snails with a shell length of 2cm do not need much air-flow and so the Liners should touch each other, minimising the air entering around the yellow base. As the snails grow, they need more air and so the Liners should now overlap slightly so that more air can enter.
Place the food on the soft Liner. Giant African Land Snails eat assorted vegetable peelings; include as wide a range as possible because a varied diet promotes a patterned shell. A shallow Water Dish is included; this should always be full of fresh cold tap water. Snails need extra calcium to help their shells grow and so rinsed out hen eggshells are ideal. Try to put large pieces of eggshell in the centre; do not crush it up.
You can access the Professional Snail Centre via the top lid. Once a week, the whole centre needs a wash in warm water with a squirt of Snail Centre Cleaner added. This is much more effective than washing-up liquid and by using a soft sponge it is easy to remove the slime. You can dismantle the centre or just lift the main part up, leaving the yellow base behind.
The Professional Snail Centre is 23cm (9") x 23cm (9") x 30cm (12") high (base tile 30½ cm, 12" square). The sides and lid are made from crystal clear strong PVC and the yellow base is tough moulded plastic. The glossy white base tile is easy to wipe clean.
When your snails outgrow this housing, they should be transferred to the Professional Snail Centre XL.
